DSD NOELL is assigned the contract for the extension of Vianden pumped-storage scheme in Luxemburg

In February 2010, DSD NOELL is assigned with an order from Société Électrique de l’ Our (SEO) S.A. for the construction of a penstock as well as extensive hydromechanical steel structures for Vianden pumped-storage scheme in Luxemburg.

In order to meet the increasing demand for electricity peak loads and unscheduled power flows in the European network and to support the extension of renewable energies, Vianden pumped-storage scheme will be provided with an additional, eleventh pump turbine – Project M11.

The order for DSD NOELL comprises the design, supply and installation of the penstocks and hydromechanical steel equipment. The primary components are the following:

Lining for the vertical and horizontal parts of the penstock with an inside diameter of 4.50 m.

Inlet/outlet tower on the upper reservoir (trash racks, stop logs, cylinder valve)

Inlet/outlet tower on lower reservoir (trash racks, stop logs)

The total investment by the Client, SEO, and their partners RWE Power AG and Cegedel S.A. amounts to approx. € 150 million.
After completion of the extension, the total power station will have a net capacity of 1,290 MW in turbine operation and 1,040 MW in pumping operation, respectively.

Vianden pumped storage scheme is one of the largest of its kind in Europe already today, and represents an essential element to secure power supply.
