Some 30 km east of Izeh in the Zagros Mountain Range of provinz of Khuzestan one can find one of Irans biggest hydroelectric power plants, Karun III. The Karun river at 720 km is the longest in the country. It has the biggest discharge among the rivers and is the only one which is navigable by boat. Karun III was built to supply electric power and to control floods. Since December 2006 Karun III produces electricity at half capacity using four
francis turbines with a capacity of 250 MW each. 2007 finally is the year of full production at 2,000 MW.
      
For Karun III DSD NOELL designed, supplied and erected:

  • 2 spillway radial gates each 15 m wide / 21 m high
  • 2 sets od hydraulic drive systems with a cylinderforce of 3500 kN each and a stroke of 11 m
  • SIEMENS SPS SimaticS 7-300 computer control (local and remote)
  • 3 hollowcone valves dia. 2,000 mm for 143 m waterpressure (test at 21,5 bar), Q = 105 m3/s
  • hydraulic drive systems with integrated measuring system for the hollowcone valves
